Why Electric Vehicles Need Different Tyres
Electric vehicles are rapidly increasing in number across Yorkshire and Scotland, and many EV owners are surprised to discover that their choice of tyre matters even more with an electric car than with a petrol or diesel. EV tyres face unique challenges that standard tyres are not always designed to handle.
The Weight Problem
EVs are significantly heavier than equivalent petrol cars due to their battery packs. A large saloon EV can weigh 500–700kg more than its petrol equivalent. This additional weight increases tyre wear rates, requires higher load ratings and puts more stress on tyre sidewalls.
Instant Torque and Accelerated Wear
Electric motors deliver maximum torque from zero RPM, meaning the rear tyres of an EV experience intense stress during acceleration. This can wear tyres 20–30% faster on the drive axle compared to a petrol equivalent. Many EV-specific tyres use harder, more wear-resistant compounds on the inner tread to compensate.
The Noise Factor
Without engine noise, road noise from tyres is far more noticeable in an EV. Premium EV tyres incorporate acoustic foam inside the tyre or specific tread patterns designed to reduce tyre roar and improve cabin comfort.
What to Look for in an EV Tyre
- High load index appropriate for your vehicle's weight
- Low rolling resistance to maximise range
- Noise cancelling or acoustic technology
- EV or Electric marking (e.g., Michelin Primacy 4 EV, Continental EcoContact 6E)
